The Story of Each Stone:
A Hiking and Writing Retreat in Colorado
Red Rooster Ranch, near Glenwood Springs, Colorado
The Story of Each Stone is a 5-day multi-genre writing and hiking retreat. This retreat offers participants an opportunity to develop their writing in a small, personalized workshop amidst the breathtaking scenery of the Rocky Mountains. Writing exercises and workshops will be interspersed with a variety of outdoor activities. Red Rooster Ranch is 8 miles from the picturesque town of Carbondale and offers scenic hikes, natural hot springs, swimming holes, and ghost walks. If participants are interested, we will drive into Aspen (about 40 minutes away), hike Hanging Lake, and take advantage of the Aspen Music Festival and great restaurants.
Participants will submit a writing sample and outline their goals prior to the workshop so that writing instruction and outdoor activities can be developed around their needs and interests. If participants do not already have writing projects underway, Brooke can offer generative exercises. Students will explore brief readings by W.S. Merwin, George Oppen, Virginia Woolf, Annie Dillard, and Mary Oliver.
Michael Hargesheimer, a therapeutic massage specialist with 30 years of experience, will be available to participants on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday morning. Pam has referred clients with chronic/specific disease or injury to Michael for decades. Massages are $65 per hour and must be scheduled in advance.
Red Rooster Ranch can comfortably accommodate 7 participants. The guest house sleeps 8 total, and there is room for one in a private studio apartment.
Participants can either fly into Denver International Airport and take a shuttle to Aspen, or fly directly into Aspen/Pitkin County Airport, where we will pick them up.
The cost for a shared bedroom in the guest house is $1250, and the cost for the private studio is $1500. This also covers tuition for the writing workshop and guided outdoor activities, basic food staples, and transportation during the workshop.
